Leonid Sigismundovich Librovich. 1891-1968

Leonid Sigismundovich Librovich, prominent national palaeontologist-stratigrapher.
In 1921, he graduated from the Petrograd Mining Institute.
In 1918, he entered the GeolCom (VSEGEI) as a collector and worked there until the end of his life.
During the war years, Senior Engineer of the Bashkir State University.
His scientific works are devoted to the Palaeozoic palaeontology and stratigraphy. He conducted field research in Central Asia, the Urals, the Caucasus, Western Siberia and Kazakhstan; paid much attention to the study of cephalopods, sponges, and brachiopods from various Carboniferous series, especially ammonoids. Work on siliceous sponges from the Carboniferous of the eastern slope of the Urals was awarded a A.I. Antipov Medal. Palaeontological works by L.S. Librovich were not only theoretical, but also applied in nature: he developed the principles for compiling general and regional stratigraphic charts, trying to give an accurate description of the essence of stratigraphic units. He headed the Interdepartmental Stratigraphic Committee on the Carboniferous system. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, other orders and medals.
