Dmitry Vasilievich Nalivkin. 1889-1982

Dmitry Vasilievich Nalivkin was Russian Soviet geologist and palaeontologist. Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Department of Geological and Geographical Sciences (geology and palaeontology) since 1946. Honorary Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR (1951).
In 1915, he graduated from the Petrograd Mining Institute. He was left at the institute, and worked there for over six decades: Assistant, teacher, from 1920 – Professor, from 1930 to 1982 – Head of the Historical Geology Department. Since 1921, for the first time in the USSR, he began to teach the facies.

His main works were on stratigraphy, palaeontology, Palaeozoic palaeogeography and minerals of the Urals, Central Asia and the Russian Platform. Made a huge contribution to the development of the geological mapping school; editor of small-scale geological maps of the USSR published in 1937-1982. Initiator of creation and first chairman of the Interdepartmental Stratigraphic Committee. Honorary member of many foreign scientific societies, Academician of the Serbian Academy of Sciences. Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of the RSFSR, Honoured Worker of Science of the Ukrainian SSR and the Bashkir ASSR. Hero of Socialist Labour (1963). Laureate of the Lenin and State Prizes of the USSR. A glacier and volcano in the Kok-Shal-Tau ridge in the Tien Shan, a cape on the Severny Island of Novaya Zemlya, a rift belt in the Tien Shan, and numerous forms of ancient organisms are named after him.
