Gennady Danilovich Romanovsky. 1830-1906

Geologist, mining engineer, Professor at the Mining Institute, is known for his studies of mineral deposits in European Russia and many years of work on the geology and palaeontology of Turkestan, which lasted from 1874 to 1879.
He graduated from the Institute of Corps of Mining Engineers in 1851. He explored coal deposits in the Moscow Region basin and in the Urals; improved the processes of exploratory drilling. He predicted the presence of oil in the Volga region, in the Urals, and in the Ferghana Valley. He was a major connoisseur of Turkestan geology; compiler of the first geological map for this area. In 1877, he directed drilling of a record-deepest well in the Crimea (790 m). After retiring in 1896, he worked in the Scientific Committee, drafted rules for minerals development and instructions for safe conduct of mining.
