The working visit of the Karpinsky Institute experts to Cuba is completed. In a fairly short stay in this country – just a few days – we managed to achieve noteworthy results in the development of Russian-Cuban cooperation in the field of geology and mineral management, as well as the promotion of the Russian Geological School in Cuba in three strategical areas.
1️. In particular, within the technological project “Time of Geology”, a series of working meetings were held between the Karpinsky Institute employees and representatives of the Institute of Geology and Paleontology, Geological Survey of the Republic of Cuba (IGP-SGC).
At the meetings, we discussed building up a metallogenic map of Cuba at 1:500,000 scale for solid minerals. As a result, general approaches to map compilation were developed and an understanding of the project implementation stages was achieved. A 1:500,000 scale metallogenic map of Cuba is expected to be released this year. In addition, negotiations were held on the first stage of a “Digital Twin of the Mineral Wealth of Cuba” – an open resource that will be available to all scientists.
Of particular note is the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Karpinsky Institute and the University of Moa, the largest geological educational institution in Cuba. The Memorandum assigns the beginning of cooperation in such major areas as geological survey at 1:50,000-1:250,000 scale; metallogenic forecast in the field of distinguishing and localization of areas for critical mineral types; implementation of digital technologies of the Karpinsky Institute at all stages of geological research, etc.
2. The opening ceremony of the fourth Karpinsky Geological Class, which will work at the Institute of Geology and Paleontology, also took place. Now, in addition to Ghana, Ethiopia, and Mozambique, the Russian geological school is also present in Cuba! In total, the project provides for the opening of up to 20 classes throughout the friendly world.
A unique flagship educational project – the Karpinsky Geological Classes – is aimed at developing an additional effective mechanism for scientific support of joint applied projects in geology and mineral management. In all Karpinsky Classes, geology lectures are held on a regular basis, both face-to-face and online, for geologists working in the industry, students, as well as for anyone interested in geosciences.
3️. As on the African continent, during the visit to Cuba, a Sambo master class was held for Cuban athletes. Such events are conducted with the aim of promoting the Russian national sport and implementing a physical education project for those interested in earth sciences – “Sambo in Granite”. Over several years, it is planned to open up to 10 Sambo centres together with leading educational institutions and associations in friendly countries.
Thus, our geologists have already done a lot of work while promoting the Russian Geological School in friendly countries. The African continent is covered, Cuba... the next friendly countries are waiting. Follow our news!
