Throughout last week, the Karpinsky Institute hosted an introductory internship for students of the Geological Prospecting Department of St. Petersburg Mining University of Empress Catherine II.
For the second year in a row, a team from St. Petersburg Mining University won the Grand Prix of the GeoChallenge, which in 2024 gathered participants from 11 countries.
The internship plan includes acquaintance with the activities of the Karpinsky Institute, excursions to the Russian Geological Library and the Geological Research Museum, as well as visits to many specialized laboratories and departments, including the only Russian Centre of Isotope Research, the OSL Laboratory, Departments of Regional Geochemistry, Geology of Uranium Deposits and Radioecology, Metallogeny, Marine Geology, as well as many other interesting areas.
‘It was interesting for us to see in practice many subjects that we had learnt in theory, such as geochemistry and mapping and laboratory methods. We saw how theory is applied in practice, learnt about the maps and materials that geologists use and heard real stories from professionals who have spent a lot of time in the field. It is important that we are now aware of all these techniques and terms that we have been learning. It really helps to have a deeper understanding of the material. The employees who told and showed us everything, you can see how they are passionate about their work and their stories and presentations motivate us to devote ourselves to this profession,’ the students noted.
An internship at the Karpinsky Institute will not only deepen the knowledge of our interns, but will also open new horizons for them in the world of geological sciences, preparing them for the challenges our industry faces. St. Petersburg as a center of geological education and culture provides unique opportunities for the young generation of specialists who will soon occupy important positions in geology and mining. We are confident that this experience will be a significant step towards their professional development and will inspire them to further scientific achievements.
