The Interdepartmental Stratigraphic Committee (ISC) of Russia was established in 1955 (Order of the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Wealth Conservation of the USSR No. 472 of 02.06.1955, Resolution of the Bureau of the Department of Geological and Geographical Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences) to solve general methodological and regulatory issues of stratigraphy and to coordinate stratigraphic works on the territory of the USSR. The All-Union Geological Research Institute (now the All-Russian Geological Research Institute of A.P.Karpinsky) was responsible for organizing the activities of the ISC.The work of the ISC is organized at the Karpinsky Institute through a specially created structural subdivision, the ISC Sector.

Interdepartmental Stratigraphic Committee of Russia (ISC) was established 70 years ago in January 1955 by two departments - the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Wealth Conservation of the USSR and the Department of Geological and Geographical Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

The All-Union Geological Research Institute (now the Karpinsky Institute) was responsible for organizing the activities of the ISC, on the basis of which the ISC successfully operates today.
