Interdepartmental Stratigraphic Committee of Russia (ISC) was established 70 years ago in January 1955 by two departments - the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Wealth Conservation of the USSR and the Department of Geological and Geographical Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
The All-Union Geological Research Institute (now the Karpinsky Institute) was responsible for organizing the activities of the ISC, on the basis of which the ISC successfully operates today.

Decisions and resolutions of the ISC all these years have been and remain mandatory in the regional state study of mineral resources of the Russian Federation.
The 45th Plenum of the Interdepartmental Stratigraphic Committee, held last week, brought together more than 100 stratigraphic specialists from a wide variety of research and production and academic geological organizations.
As part of the work of the Plenum ‘Regional stratigraphic scheme of Quaternary formations of the Crimea and adjacent water areas of the Black and Azov Seas’ (authors: D.N. Derenyuk (SAI RC TSLATI), L.R. Semenova (FSBI Karpinsky Institute), S.V. Beletsky (SAI RC TSLATI), A.A. Sheikov (Yuzhmorgeologiya AO) was approved.
Also at the event the ISC Subject Commission on Stratigraphy of Oil, Gas and Coal Basins was established, the Statute of the Commission on Isotope Stratigraphy was approved, possible changes to the General Stratigraphic Scale were considered, additions and amendments to the new edition of the Stratigraphic Code under preparation were presented.
