At the initiative of the British Geological Survey, an international meeting was held on March 12-16, 2007, at which representatives from 43 countries discussed the creation of a dynamic map of world geodata or a global geological and cartographic Internet service for providing access to national digital geological map databases via the Internet. The project aims to meet the needs of society in geological information by posting geoscientific maps of world countries on the Internet. The project received a succinct and precise name - OneGeology.
The participants in the Brighton meeting adopted the Accord, which declared the intention of the meeting participants to fully promote the OneGeology. The Accord is the organizational, technical and political basis of the project.
Soon after the Brighton meeting, a technical seminar was organized in Utrecht, the Netherlands on May 30-31, 2007, at which short-terms OneGeology development plans were determined.
OneGeology was launched officially on August 6, 2008, at the 33rd International Geological Congress.
