MASS SPECTROMETRY

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

This method is practically indispensable for determining very low levels of chemical elements. This is especially true for determining REE and precious metals in rock samples.

The Laboratory has two inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometers: ELAN-DRC-e (Perkin Elmer) and Agilent 7700x (Agilent Technologies). High performance, exceptional stability of the mass scale makes these devices indispensable in laboratory practice. The patented technological solutions implemented in these devices provide effective removal of polyatomic interferences and can significantly reduce the detection limits of many elements.

The CL uses the technique developed and certified by the VSEGEI CL: VSEGEI MP No. 10/2010 “Determination of macro and trace elements (including rare earths) by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in rock, soil and loose deposits”, third category of accuracy.

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry with laser sampling (LA ICPMS)

Another analytical area of the laboratory is extremely promising - the combination of ICPMS with laser sampling (laser ablation). Studies have shown that this method allows analysis to be performed on the detection limits of hundredths of ppm not only in individual grains and microinclusions, but also when using special techniques - in the sample as a whole (gross analysis), which in some cases will allow us to abandon the time-consuming and costly process of preliminary sample decomposition.

It is possible to carry out a local analysis of individual inclusions, minerals, and grains, in which the analyzed aliquot is taken by a laser probe (laser ablation) from a given point in the sample with a diameter of 10 to 200 μm. To implement these opportunities for solving a specific problem, additional experimental and methodological work is required (after the agreement of conditions between the Customer and the Laboratory management).
